Our Story

Tin Roof Kitchen & Home was founded in 2008 in El Campo, Texas. We are a full-service wood shop offering a wide range of products and services such as Custom Carpentry, Custom Sawing, Kiln Drying, Milling, Turning, and Planning. Our family owned and operated sawmill is located on our family property, Pratka Ranch, in Lane City, Texas. We personally mill the wood for all of our products and custom projects and are fully equipped to handle millwork up to eight feet in diameter and twenty feet long.

However, our story began long before a single piece of lumber was milled. Tin Roof Kitchen & Home founder, Kurt Pratka, grew up watching and learning from his father Mark Pratka who has always had a talent and passion for woodworking. Mark built Mark’s Machine Company, Inc. from humble beginnings to the international business it is today.

In 2017, Tin Roof Kitchen & Home received two awards for excellence in wood design from the Texas Forestry Association.

Sit a spell and we will tell about ourselves.

For the people at Tin Roof all you need is a comfortable pair of jeans, a thirty minute drive on a back road, a quick stop for an orange soda, a lot of land and a cabin with a tin roof. Tin Roof was named after a farm in mid Alabama, but it’s more than a place; it’s a state of being. It’s an escape from daily stresses and it’s an opportunity to rediscover the peace that comes by simply surrounding yourself in nature.

That’s what we offer. We work with natural materials to bring you exquisite form and durable functionality.

So today, invite you down an old road to escape reality with us. No cell phone service here. Just a few rocking chairs under a tin roof.

Two Companies join together to bring the finest hand-crafted cutting boards to you

What started out as the perfect Christmas gift for board creator Kurt Pratka, quickly turned into a passion. With his resources, Kurt personally chose the wood, aligned it to create a beautiful design, sealed the board and sanded it to perfection. In a matter of weeks, Kurt was fulfilling orders throughout the town. It didn’t take Tough County Sawmill long to see the potential. That is when Tin Roof Kitchen & Home brought their e-commerce expertise and passion for the product to the table.

Tin Roof Kitchen & Home and Tough Country Sawmill have partnered together to offer only the finest hand crafted wood cutting boards available. It is a product and a cut of nature that will last a lifetime.

What makes Tin Roof Kitchen & Home so special

Each Tin Roof Cutting Board is unique and individually crafted. Our boards are not stained. They are only sealed, sanded and moisturized to enhance each board’s natural colors. We specialize in Pecan wood, but use a variety of hardwoods that include Walnut, Maple, Oak, Pecan, Mesquite, Padauk, Purpleheart, Teak, and many more. Specific woods can be used upon request for a customized board.

Two Types of Cutting Boards allow us to bring quality and value

Our End Grain Boards are the best of the best. They have a much harder and more durable surface than regular cutting boards. They also resist knife marks and help keep them sharper. The blade goes between the end grain fibers like cutting into a firm paint brush which preserves the blade and allows the fibers to move back into place after cutting.

The Canopy Grove Flat Grain Boards are easier to manufacture and are therefore less expensive. Tin Roof Flat Grain Cutting Boards are made with hand selected quality hardwoods so you know they are the best quality for the best price.
